August 2009, Ann Arbor, MI: Freedom Imaging Systems partners with Paradatec and introduces advanced OCR technology to FreeScan.

Paradatec was established in Germany over 20 years ago.  In 1997, they developed a product called PROSAR-AIDA, a document classification and data extraction solution.

Freedom Imaging Systems has partnered with Paradatec to enhance RICAR’s scanning application, FreeScan, with the addition of Paradatec’s PROSAR-AIDA OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capabilities.  The PROSAR recognition program uses artificial neural networks to read documents of any kind whether they are structured, non-structured or semi-structured.  Using the AIDA analysis program (Artificial Intelligence for Document Analysis), data on scanned EOBs is extracted and processed. Documents containing line items, procedural charges and diagnostic codes are automatically extracted and added as indexes for the documents.

Freedom partnered with Paradatec to meet the needs of longtime customer Sonora Quest Laboratories. Sonora wanted to convert scanned EOBs into electronic 835/ERA files to enable more rapid processing using their Revenue Cycle Management software.  With the combination of FreeScan and PROSAR-AIDA, the revenue cycle process is significantly reduced.  At last report, the system achieves over 85% automation across all scanned documents, and Sonora performs the revenue cycle management process with 80% less labor than previously required.

The capabilities of FreeScan and PROSAR-AIDA are limitless. Extraction of an unlimited number of data fields is possible.  For EOBs this means, payer number, data of service, patient name, patient number, procedure codes, reason codes, tax amounts or any other specific line detail.  The return on investment is immediate and significant, as proven with its implementation at Sonora Quest.
